Fringe science is scientific inquiry in an established field of study which departs significantly from mainstream or orthodox theories, and is classified in the "fringes" of a credible mainstream academic discipline. Fringe concepts are considered highly speculative or weakly confirmed by mainstream scientists.

Fringe science can and has become accepted by the mainstream, an example is the theory of continental drift discredited until the late 1950s.
